Oxbridge is a portmanteau of Oxford and Cambridge , the two oldest, wealthiest, and most famous universities in the United Kingdom. The term is used to refer to them collectively, in contrast to other British universities, and more broadly to describe characteristics reminiscent of them, often with implications of superior social or intellectual status or elitism.
Although both universities were founded more than eight centuries ago, the term Oxbridge is relatively recent.
Graduate students operate on the basis of the Academic Year which extends beyond the end of the Easter Term. The Academic Year commences on 1 October.

This means that you will have a restricted choice of dates and may not be able to graduate on a date of your preference. Postgraduates completing research degrees will be sent an invitation by the University to book a ceremony once they have been granted leave to supplicate.
Candidates supplicating for a DPhil must ensure that the paper and electronic copy of their thesis are deposited in the Bodleian. Alumni who were undergraduates and studied for a BA degree are normally eligible to take the Oxford MA seven years after they matriculated. The degree ceremony booking system allows Colleges to add MA and historic candidates into a holding list for each ceremony.
Places will be made available to MAs and historic graduands in the holding list according to when the College is presenting and whether there is still space after all current students have had the opportunity to sign up.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an Oxford student nearing graduation must be in want of three things: a First, a Blue, or a spouse. Oxbridge tends to attract very dedicated individuals who put more value in their studies and personal achievement than matters of the heart— p erhaps we should remind them that even Stephen Hawking dated while at university. Aspirations of having a partner and a family are just as worthwhile.
And if you do have your sights set high, a partner can be a source of comfort and support to get you through the inevitable trials and failures that come with chasing your dreams. Good grades and even a half-blue are somewhat achievable if you revise more and train hard , but to leave Oxford hand-in-hand with someone you love can seem like an impossible feat. Certain aspects of the Oxbridge model leave little room for extracurricular encounters, especially as an undergraduate.
Most will only live in Oxford for eight weeks at a time, leaving college accommodation to return home during the lengthy vacations. Spending long periods apart can add strain to blossoming relationships or prevent partnerships from forming altogether. Essays and endless reading lists take priority, as does the initial exploration phase in the life of a fresher.

Both Oxford and Cambridge agree that choosing the degree you wish to study, not which university you want to apply to, is the most important decision to make. Make sure you read the course details carefully. Remember, you will be asked about your choice at the interview, so strong personal interest in the course is essential. Both universities are world-renowned in both arts and science subjects, so the decision is largely an individual one.
